Die Stummfilme waren die reinste Form des Kinos. Das einzige, was den Stummfilmen fehlte, waren die Stimmen der Leute auf der Leinwand und die Geräusche. Aber diese Unvollkommenheit rechtfertigte nicht die große Veränderung, die der Ton mit sich brachte. Ich will damit sagen, dem Stummfilm fehlte sehr wenig, nur der natürliche Ton. Man hätte deshalb die Technik des reinen Kinos nicht aufzugeben brauchen, wie man das mit dem Tonfilm gemacht hat.

Die Arbeit des Kritikers ist in vieler Hinsicht eine leichte. Wir riskieren sehr wenig und erfreuen uns dennoch einer Überlegenheit gegenüber jene, die ihr Werk und sich selbst unserem Urteil überantworten. Am dankbarsten sind negative Kritiken, da Sie amüsant zu schreiben und auch zu lesen sind. Aber wir Kritiker müssen uns der bitteren Wahrheit stellen, dass, im Großen und Ganzen betrachtet, das gewöhnliche Durchschnittsprodukt wohl immer noch bedeutungsvoller ist als unsere Kritik, die es als solches bezeichnet. Doch es gibt auch Zeiten, da ein Kritiker tatsächlich etwas riskiert, wenn es um die Entdeckung und Verteidigung von Neuem geht. Die Welt reagiert oft ungnädig auf neue Talente, neue Kreationen. Das Neue braucht Freunde…
